Fresh fighting broke out along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier early on Wednesday morning, with each side accusing the opposing side of initiating lethal clashes.
Pakistan's military stated that its troops had killed "15-20 Taliban fighters" and injured many in the Spin Boldak district border district.
A Taliban government representative said that twelve non-combatants had been killed and over a hundred wounded by Pakistani firing. He added that numerous Pakistani soldiers had been lost their lives. None of the reported deaths could be verified by third parties.
Violence between the neighbouring countries has flared since blasts shook Afghanistan last week, which Kabul attributed on Islamabad. The Taliban reject claims that it is sheltering militants aiming at Pakistan.
The opposing forces are not only battling for the upper hand on the frontier, but also on social media, attempting to convince the general population that their faction is causing greater losses.
The most recent clashes follow intense cross-border confrontations over the past few days, when the Taliban asserted to have eliminated fifty-eight members of the Islamabad's armed forces and Pakistan said it killed two hundred "militants and linked insurgents". The claimed death tolls announced by both parties could not be confirmed by external sources.
A few days of fragile peace that had lasted since the recent days were broken on Wednesday.
Footage allegedly of the fighting and its aftermath have been shared on the internet and on social channels, including footage claiming to be of those deceased and grainy shots from night vision cameras claiming to be of check posts destroyed. These recordings have not been authenticated.
A source in the border area in Afghanistan stated that clashes broke out at around 4 a.m. local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on Tuesday). Another local in Spin Boldak, who lives about one kilometre away from the border crossing, said that "intense clashes continued for almost five hours".
"I see drones and jets soaring over us, some of our relatives are wounded," they said.
A doctor in one of the medical facilities in the region stated that he counted "7 bodies and 36 wounded brought to the medical center", including men, females and minors.
The situation were "strained" and more victims were being taken to hospital, he noted.
A regional Taliban official in the area announced that "hundreds of households have been displaced since last night due to the heavy fighting". He mentioned they were on "high alert" after a several military positions were targeted by Pakistani jets. He added that they had the bodies of 2 armed forces members.
In a distinct overnight clash on Pakistan's north-western border, the Islamabad's forces said that 25 to 30 Taliban and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "believed" to have been eliminated.
The clashes have prompted appeals for reduced tensions from other countries including Beijing and Russia, as well as a suggestion from the American leader that he could step in to facilitate peace.
On that day, a UN official, United Nations representative on the conditions of civil liberties in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by accounts of civilian casualties and evacuations because of the fighting.
"I call on everyone involved to practice maximum restraint, safeguard civilians, and abide by global regulations," he wrote.
Pakistan has long accused the Afghan Taliban of allowing the Pakistani militants to function from their land and battle against the Islamabad government in an effort to impose a rigid religion-based system of governance.
The Afghan Taliban government has consistently rejected these allegations.
