Belgium's police have arrested three suspects accused of plotting an attack on the nation's premier, Bart de Wever.
Legal authorities characterized the alleged plot as a extremist assault with jihadist roots targeting the prime minister and fellow government officials.
During searches conducted in Antwerp's Deurne district, close to the prime minister's personal dwelling, investigators found a suspected homemade bomb and indications that the accused were preparing to use a unmanned aerial vehicle.
While the prospective targets of the assault were not publicly identified by the federal prosecutors, Second-in-command Maxime Prevot stated that the prime minister was among them.
"Information of a premeditated strike targeting Prime Minister Bart de Wever is deeply alarming," the deputy prime minister stated in a message on X on the investigation day.
"It emphasizes that we are confronting a genuine terrorist threat and that we have to remain vigilant," he added.
The three individuals detained on charges of terrorism-related attempted murder and engagement in the functions of a terrorist group all reside in Antwerp, according to the legal authorities. They were born in three different years between 2001 and 2007.
On Thursday evening, one of the individuals was freed, while two others were under interrogation and likely to be presented before a court on the following day.
Legal authorities said that the individuals were arrested after a judge directed inspections of their homes in the location by police officers backed by bomb detection canines.
Throughout these searches that they found a object which appeared to be an IED, legal representative Ann Fransen announced at a press conference on Thursday.
Raids also uncovered a "bag of steel balls" and a 3D printer, with evidence suggesting drone-based payload delivery, she noted.
The prosecutor said that there had been 80 terrorism investigations opened in the country in the current year - more than the total number of instances in last year.
During the spring, five suspects were found guilty for a 2023 plot to attack the prime minister while he was serving as Antwerp's mayor.
