The Devastating Transformation Only 12 Months Has Brought in America

One year ago, the situation was utterly distinct. Prior to the American presidential vote, reflective Americans could acknowledge the nation's deep flaws – its inequities and disparity – however they could still perceive it as the US. A free society. A place where constitutional order held significance. A country led by a respectable and upright official, notwithstanding his advanced age and increasing frailty.

Nowadays, in late October 2025, numerous citizens scarcely know the land we inhabit. Persons alleged as illegal immigrants are collected and forced into vehicles, sometimes refused legal rights. The left side of the White House – is undergoing demolition for an obscene event space. The leader is targeting his political rivals or perceived antagonists and insisting the justice department transfer an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are dispatched into American cities with deceptive justifications. The Pentagon, relabeled the Department of War, has effectively rid itself of routine media oversight during its expenditure of potentially totaling almost one trillion dollars in public funds. Universities, law firms, journalism organizations are buckling from leader's menaces, and billionaires are handled as aristocracy.

“America, shortly prior to its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has fallen over the edge into authoritarianism and totalitarianism,” an American historian, stated in August. “In the end, swifter than I thought feasible, it transpired here.”

One awakes to new horrors. And it's hard to comprehend – and agonizing to acknowledge – how deeply lost we are, and the speed at which it unfolded.

However, we know that Trump was duly elected. Following his profoundly alarming first term and following the alerts associated with the understanding of the rightwing blueprint – following the president personally stated openly he would act as an autocrat just on day one – a majority of citizens selected him rather than his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as today's circumstances is, it's more daunting to understand that we are just several months into this presidential term. How will another 36 months of this deterioration leave us? And what if that period becomes something even longer, as there is not anyone to stop this president from deciding that another term is essential, possibly for defense purposes?

Certainly, not everything is hopeless. There will be congressional elections in 2026 that may bring a different political equilibrium, if Democrats regain the Senate or House of parliament. There exist government representatives who are attempting to exert some accountability, for example representatives currently starting a probe into the attempted cash appropriation from legal authorities.

And a presidential election in 2028 could initiate us down the road to recovery precisely as last year’s election put us on this disappointing trajectory.

We see countless citizens protesting in public spaces of their cities, like they performed last weekend in the No Kings rallies.

An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the slumbering force of the US is rising”, just as it did after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or throughout the Vietnam war protests or during the seventies crisis.

On those occasions, the unstable nation finally returned to balance.

He claims he understands the indicators of that resurgence and notices it unfolding now. As support, he points to the widespread marches, the widespread, multi-faction opposition against a television host's removal and the largely united refusal by journalists to accept government requirements they solely cover approved content.

“The dormant force always remains dormant until certain corruption grows too toxic, an specific act so disrespectful of societal benefit, specific cruelty so noisy, that it is compelled other than to stir.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I value Reich’s experienced view. Maybe he’ll prove to be right.

In the meantime, the big questions remain: will the nation ever recover? Can it retrieve its standing in the world and its commitment to constitutional order?

Or should we recognize that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My negative thoughts suggests that the latter is true; that all may indeed be finished. My positive feelings, though, advises me that we need to strive, in whatever ways possible.

Personally, as an observer of the press, that’s about pushing media professionals to live up, more completely, to their mission of holding power to account. For different individuals, it might involve engaging with congressional campaigns, or organizing rallies, or discovering methods to safeguard electoral access.

Not even one year prior, we were in a very different place. A year from now? Or after another term? The reality is, we cannot predict. Our sole course is to strive to continue fighting.
