This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
